Heating plant in Närpiö

Customer: Närpiön Kaukolämpö Oy
Years: 2005 – 2013

This project was an all-inclusive heating plant project that started with no existing district heating in the town of Närpiö. In 2005 Planora conducted a feasibility study comparing the feasibility of various energy production alternatives. The most feasible alternative was bio-fuel based district heating.

In 2006 Planora Oy began the planning and design of a district heating network. In the same year began the planning and design of a biofuel and fuel oil heating plant. The fuel oil heating plant consisted of two 3,5 MW heavy fuel oil boilers, the bio fuel plant consisted of a 9 MW biomass boiler fired by sod peat and wood chips as well as  a 2,5 MW heavy fuel oil reserve boiler.

Together with the customer, Planora Oy tendered the turnkey contract for the fuel oil heating plant and the subcontracts for the biofuel plant. Planora also carried out supervision during construction. The fuel oil heating plant was completed in the fall of 2006 and the biofuel heating plant was completed a year later in the fall of 2007.

Planora Oy was responsible for the application of grants and obtaining the necessary permits, as well as the planning and design of the heat distribution centres for the customers of the district heating network.

Planora Oy has carried out the extension of the district heating network plan and updated the hydraulic modelling and calculations.

In order to reduce the share of oil in the production of district heating, Planora Oy carried out a feasibility study for building an additional biofuel plant in 2010. In 2011, Planora Oy started the planning and design of an extension of the plant. One 4 MW biomass boiler and a fuel conveyor were added to the heating plant, and the plant was operational at the beginning of 2013.
